We get a lot of inbound from clients asking if we build websites (our network of certified service providers does). When people ask, they usually have grand ideas; videos on the home page, music…they basically want their website to be a web commercial. Either that or they are looking to build a free site on Wix or Squarespace. As a local business, you should not do either of these. Local businesses should use WordPress templates for their websites, here’s why:
Why Local Businesses Should Use WordPress Templates for their Websites
Ease of Use
WordPress is only hard the first few times you use it. Once you learn the lingo and have logged on a few times, you will get the hang of it. While knowing HTML helps (a lot), you don’t need to be an expert in code to implement a WordPress template.
It’s also super easy to sign up, just go to WordPress.com and you can create a free account, it takes just a few minutes. If you need a host, you can even use WordPress for hosting (although we’re fans of 1and1).
WordPress is not just for Blogs
WordPress is a great platform to build an entire website. Yes, it started as a blogging platform, but it is an incredibly robust web content management system. That means if you choose WordPress, you can manage all aspects of your website. Just think of it TechCrunch, The New Yorker, and BBC America are all set up on WordPress. If it’s good enough for them, it should be for you too!
There are tons of themes that you can choose from. Many of them are free, and many are quite inexpensive. On WordPress alone, there are more than 2,000 free WordPress Themes for you to choose from. Check out Themeforest, that’s our favorite source for inexpensive and beautiful custom themes for everything from hair salons to restaurants to clothing stores. This means that you don’t need to hire a designer and you can keep the cost down.
WordPress plugins are AWESOME. They are the way you can customize your WordPress website without needing to spend money on a coder. There’s a plugin for almost everything. If you want to customize it, there are lots of ways to do so (click here to see some of the most popular WordPress plugins). This means you can find a plug in for everything from:
- Selling stuff online
- Easily creating duplicate posts
- Adding a contact form
- Newsletter Signups
- And tons more
Even Matt Cutts (he is the GOD of SEO) has said that WordPress is loved by Google. In the video above Cutts said that WordPress takes care of 80-90% of all of SEO mechanics. That’s powerful. Once you combine WordPress with the YoastSEO plugin we mentioned above, you will be able to fully take advantage of all of WordPress’ SEO benefits.
Compare this to say Wix. Because of the way the page structure is configured, you may not get indexed by Google, and if you’re not indexed by Google, you have no chance of being found online. Wix uses rel-canonical which makes it harder for Google to index, so that’s like building a house with no roads for people to reach it.
WordPress is used by tons of people. This means that if there is something that is outside of your scope, you will not have a hard time finding someone to help you with your WordPress site at an affordable price. Other lesser-known platforms will make it so you need to pay more when you need expert help. As of right now, around 25% of all websites are built on WordPress.
As mentioned above, WordPress is quite popular. This means that there are tons of communities where you can go for answers and support. A few places we recommend you check out:
The Mobile Web
You need to have at least a responsive website for many reasons. First, if your site is not responsive, it will not look right on smartphones or tablets. This means that your audience will bounce – leave the site – and this affects where you show up in Google’s search. Just make sure that when you pick your theme that it is responsive. On top of that, WordPress itself is responsive, and it has an app – that means that you can make changes, add posts, images all from your smartphone or tablet.
Note: Don’t be fooled by websites that offer you a free mobile website. This makes it so you are not indexed by Google and you lose tons of SEO juice.
WordPress has been around for a long time (since 2005). They are reputable and trustworthy.
WordPress is Open Source
Open Source is awesome. That means its source code can be inspected, modified, and edited by anyone. That means that you can customize the site as you desire. This means you have complete control.
Now that you know why local businesses should use WordPress templates for their websites, we hope you take this advice. The benefits really outrank any potential dangers. We’re big fans and think you will be too.
